Coffins of King Henry VIII (centre), Queen Jane Seymour (right), King Charles I with a child of Queen Anne (left), vault under the choir, St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, marked by a stone slab in the floor. 1888 sketch by Alfred Young Nutt, Surveyor to the Dean and Canons. The vault had been opened previously in 1813 in a search for the coffin of Charles I, when several relics were removed but replaced in 1888, under the supervision of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Nutt recorded that Henry's coffin was about two metres in length and was in a state of disrepair with some bodily remains visible. It is possible that the damage had occurred during the hasty burial of Charles I.
