(Detail from full painting: Portrait painting by Domenico Fetti (c 1621-22) (Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice).) The attribution of this painting remains controversial. According to Dennis Stevens, the editor of the English Edition of Monteverdi's letters, in his book MONTEVERDI IN VENICE (P.137; Farleigh Dickinson University Press, 2001), this is NOT a portrait of Monteverdi, but of a Spanish Gentleman or Soldier. Just other attribution: but by one author (Askew 1978) suggested to represent the actor Tristano Martinelli.
